Precision alignment for cleaner pipeline welds

Getting a weld right starts long before the arc strikes. Fit-up accuracy, pipe alignment, and a stable working setup are what separate clean, consistent welds from costly rework. It’s why the tools you choose matter – and it’s why Tremco Pipeline Equipment supplies Sawyer Manufacturing Company pipeline equipment to customers across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Sawyer has been manufacturing pipeline and welding equipment from their headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1948. Over more than 75 years, its products have earned a reputation for durability, precision, and field-proven reliability on projects around the world.

Tremco Pipeline Equipment has a long-standing partnership with Sawyer, supplying the company’s clamps and beveling machines to weld testing equipment for over 20+ years. Now, TPE is supplying Sawyer’s latest release – Spider Clamp Series 400.

Spider Clamp Series 400

The Spider Clamp Series 400: Built for Precision Internal Alignment

The Series 400 is Sawyer’s latest internal alignment clamp, engineered to provide a secure and stable hold for joining flanges and short pipe sections where true bore alignment before tack-welding or final weld out is critical.

The tool features a dual expanding clamp system – two independently operated clamps connected by a precision-machined centering shaft. The lower clamp is inserted into the first pipe and secured with a hand knob. The upper clamp then expands via a hand bar to align and hold the mating pipe or fitting. Because each clamp moves independently, the Series 400 can compensate for slight variations in internal diameter – a practical advantage in field fit-ups, prefabrication environments, or situations where precision machining is not possible.

The tool offers a robust design that is easy to position and operate. Because the clamp sits entirely inside the joint, it allows full 360-degree access around the outside of the pipe, meaning there is no need for repositioning or partial removal mid-weld.

Manufactured from stainless steel, the clamp is corrosion resistant and compatible with a broad range of pipe materials from carbon stainless steel to duplex and exotic alloys. Its smooth, burr-free contact surfaces protect internal pipe finishes without sacrificing grip.

The Series 400 is available in three sizes weighing between 1.4-66 kg and able to accommodate pipe diameters of between 2-36 inches.

The Spider Clamp 400 ensures consistent accuracy, reduces setup time, and enhances overall weld quality – making it a trusted solution for professional fitters and fabricators.

Sawyer Clamps: A Tool for Every Fit-Up Scenario

The Spider Clamp 400 sits within Sawyer’s broader clamp range supplied by TPE. Whether the job calls for external alignment, internal fit-up, or reforming out-of-round heavy-wall pipe, Sawyer has a solution designed for it.

External Clamps

Sawyer’s external lineup covers everything from hand lever cage clamps to large-diameter hydraulic systems. The Hydraulic Cage Clamp handles pipe from 16-60 inches in diameter, using hydraulic force to pull down with minimal operator effort and a rapid-release mechanism to speed up removal after tacking. Arched crossbars give welders complete 360-degree access without removing the clamp.

For out-of-round pipe, the Rim Clamp and Ultra Rim Clamp are the tools of choice. Built to reform pipe up to Schedule 80, they handle out-of-round conditions up to 2 inches and are available for pipe diameters from 4 inches to over 72 inches. Plated jackscrews with pivoting pads and a setting gauge make accurate reforming pressure straightforward and repeatable.

Internal Clamps

Sawyer’s internal clamps are custom built and field proven. The Large Manual Clamp covers pipe from 10-64 inches in diameter, is self-positioning, and ships ready to use with a 49 inch reach rod, hook, and handle. It leaves the weld gap unobstructed for a full stringer bead – and with optional copper backup rings and a choice of hard or soft wheels, it can be configured for a wide variety of pipe-to-pipe fit-up requirements.

The Large Hydraulic Clamp delivers the same proven performance with hydraulic operation for faster, easier deployment. The Small Manual Clamp handles tighter applications, while the Jack Screw clamp is available for larger pipe over 48 inches.
